These ground beef burgers are so simple, yet they are a delicious and quick, satisfying meal. Prepare extra patties for the freezer because they freeze well and are great to keep on hand for busy weeknights.
The recipe hails from my Thea Kanella of Platanos, Greece who was kind enough to make them for us and to share her outstanding recipe.
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 35 minutes
Ingredients:
- 2.5 lbs. ground beef
- 1/2 lb. Graviera cheese, shredded (If not available, try Gruyere as a substitute)
- 1/2 lb (about 3 cups) of crusty white bread cubes, crusts removed
- 1 tbsp. salt
- 1 tbsp. dried oregano
- 1 tsp. black pepper (level)
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 cup olive oil, plus more for drizzling
Preparation:
In a shallow bowl or plate, soak the bread in water until the flesh of the bread is completely moistened. Gently squeeze out most of the water but make sure to keep the bread somewhat soft and moist, otherwise it will be too dry.
In a large mixing bowl, crumble the bread with your hands and add to the ground beef. Add the shredded cheese and the remaining ingredients and mix well. The meat mixture should be moist and light. If more liquid is needed, add a small amount of water.
Shape the meat into patties, drizzle with a bit of olive oil and either pan fry over medium high heat or grill. Serve with fried potatoes and a salad and you’re set.
